Note: I wrote this post back in May 2010 for a guest post on a large tech blog, but it never got used. I found it today while going through my inbox and decided it was too good to not post. This is my entrepreneurial journey from 2004 until May 2010.

As I made my way from Milwaukee, WI to Madison, WI for my freshman year of college in fall 2004, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I’d know for awhile that I liked working for myself: I’d been a soccer referee since I was 12, which allowed me to make my own hours and make more money than any 12 year old should be able to earn. I’d been fairly bored with high school because we learned boring theories instead of practical ideas that would help me later in life. My biggest take away from high school was “more practice, less theory.”

All of these thoughts took a backseat in my 18 year old mind when I received a letter from the University of Wisconsin notifying me that I’d lost the student football ticket lottery. I was devastated.

After moving in, I’d been thinking about how to find tickets, but I didn’t have to look very far. One of my friends invited me to a party my first night at college. I was about ready to call it a night and walk home when I heard a guy screaming into his cell phone. He hung up and was so mad that he slammed his phone on the ground, breaking it. He got even angrier because he said he didn’t have the money to get a new cell phone.

Something in my brain just clicked and I said, “hey, do you have football tickets?” He looked at me really strangely, but said he did. I responded, “well I don’t have them, but I’d buy you a new phone for your tickets.” I wasn’t really expecting anything, other than maybe some choice words, but to my surprise, he got excited. The next day, I tracked the broken cell phone guy down via a friend in the frat, bought him the money for the phone and made the exchange.

I was pretty excited. It only took me one night to get my football tickets. All was right in the world. I told my story to some of my new friends and quickly realized that there were a ton of kids who were in my same predicament. I agreed to help them find tickets. It pays to be in the right place at the right time.

Enter Exchangehut. I first remember seeing flyers and spray paint stencils for the site a week into my freshman year. I checked it out, signed up and was user number 1117. Exchangehut was a ticket exchange that worked like the stock market. Buyers could input a bid price and sellers could put in an ask price, creating the market. When the prices matched up, a sale happened and both parties were contacted. I used the site to help 4-5 friends buy tickets and quickly saw how useful the site was.

As the year went on, I became one of the more active users, I realized that the site had limitations and thought about creating a competitor. I wrote up a simple business plan, but got discouraged because I was having trouble finding a programmer to write the new site. I put the project on the back burner and went on with my summer.

I was in the right place at the right time again a month later. The owner of Exchangehut was selling the site via an auction because he was graduating. I quickly shot an email back, did my research and put in a bid. I excitedly talked with my friends about how I was buying a business and to my surprise, one of my best friends from high school said he was too. I said “what business” and we both said “exchangehut” at the same time. He was a computer engineering major and we decided to merge our bids. A month later, we were the proud owners of a 2000 person tickets and textbooks website at age 19.

We ran the site until 2008, growing the site to 150k users across 8 college campuses. We learned a ton and needless to say, I was hooked. I loved coming up with ideas for the site, promoting the brand and working my own hours. I was making more money each week working on average 8 hours per week than my roommates were making bartending and waiting tables full time. I loved the freedom that came with being able to work from anywhere. I got to travel places and meet interesting, creative people. I enjoyed meeting people who though “how can we fix a problem” not “why can’t we.” We sold the business to our ad network in summer 2008, but I knew I was going to start a new business. This isn’t to say it was easy. We put in long hours, answered angry customer emails and calls and continued to go to class.

Like many entrepreneurs I know, I keep a business idea list. I had over 200 ideas on my list and after selling, worked on cutting them down to 10 that I thought were promising and would be fun to work on. All that stopped when three professors I had gotten to know independently told me that I had to meet a student named Jesse Davis. At the same time, two of my friends said that Jesse was working on something cool and needed a partner.

I met Jesse in one of the libraries on campus and he pitched me his idea. Jesse’s pitch went something like this:

“I just read Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat and couldn’t get through it when I got to US Marine Justin Ellsworth’s story. He was killed in action in Iraq and his family wanted access to his Yahoo! email account. Yahoo said no.

After a long court battle, a judge ordered Yahoo! to turn over the contents of his email accounts to his parents. It shouldn’t take months to gain access to a deceased person’s email account. Also, what if I don’t want my parents looking into my Facebook account or other sites I might have? Friedman ends the passage by saying “someone sort this out.” Let’s create a system for people to store their last wishes for their digital assets, which are any online account or file on their computer, and let’s allow them to input their passwords so that their survivors have access.

I immediately thought back to ExchangeHut. In 2005, we hired a programmer to help us make improvements with the site and at one point, I realized that our programmer has all of the usernames and passwords to the server, database, credit card processing, affiliate programs and everything else that was necessary to run the site. Like programmers like to do, he used a random password generator, so there would be no way we’d be able to guess his passwords if he were to get hit by the proverbial bus. We ended up having our programmer write down every password on a piece of paper and I stored it in our safe deposit box, just in case. Jesse’s idea would have solved this problem.

I was looking for a project, Jesse was looking for a cofounder with some experience and we hit it off. Two months later, we founded Entrustet.

I was sold on Entrustet because we had a chance to create a solution a real life problem. The death of a loved one is an incredibly stressful time and we thought we could help give people peace of mind that their digital assets would be dealt with according to their wishes, and that survivors wouldn’t have the burden of having to guess what the deceased person wanted done with their online accounts.

We’ve been working on Entrustet since November of 2008 and launched in March 2010. In our first year, we spent under $20k starting the business. We were able to spend so little because we hustled and were located in Madison. We’ve stayed in Madison, even though we’ve had opportunities to move to Silicon Valley, New York, Boston or Austin. Being located in the Midwest has given us some advantages that are often overlooked by people on the coasts.

It’s incredibly cheap to live and work in Madison. Our office is located across the street from the state capital and we pay $200 per month. I pay $400 per month to live in a nice apartment four blocks from the office. On the coasts, we’d have had to pay 5-10x more. While the talent pool is not as deep, we’ve found talented employees who cost a fraction of what they would on the coasts.

Madison is small enough that we’re able to get in contact with anyone we want to relatively easily and Madison has groups like MERLIN Mentors that help new startups by pairing founders with successful entrepreneurs who server as in informal board of advisers. Everyone in our company walks to work and we’ve become active in the startup community by starting Capital Entrepreneurs, a founders group with over 60 tech companies in the Madison area.

I’m a huge believer is pursing your passion and starting starups has allowed me to pursue mine.

I wrote a post last week about some of challenges facing Chilean would-be entrepreneurs because of the culture. Overall, Chilean culture punishes failure, which stifles innovation.

It got me thinking and I realized that it seems to me that a fixed percentage of people in the world are entrepreneurial. I’m not sure what the exact number is but if I had to guess, it’s probably around 10% and I’d be willing to bet that percentage is fairly static across the world. I believe that these 10% have the skills, desire and entrepreneurial spirit to start a business and succeed. 10% of Americans, Saudis, Chileans, Spaniards and South Africans all have the desire to start businesses, so why do some places have lots of entrepreneurship and others don’t?

Why does the US have a higher percentage of entrepreneurs than Chile, Saudi Arabia or other places around the world. And in the US why do Silicon Valley, NYC, Austin, Boulder and Boston have a higher percentage of entrepreneurs compared to Des Moines, Tallahassee and Phoenix?

I believe that certain cultural values free up the entrepreneurial 10% to actually start businesses and succeed. For example, in the United States, we reward risk taking, business ownership and making money. On average, we also love innovation, learning and trying new things. We love rags to riches stories, even if they are only partly true. If someone’s business fails, it’s seen as experience, not a black mark. In the US, these values are stronger in San Francisco and Austin than in Cleveland and Memphis.

In other parts of the world, there are many different cultural pressures that stifle innovation: punishing failure, punishing innovation, closed culture. Some places even look down on successful people.

In Silicon Valley, I bet 20% of the people are entrepreneurs in some way shape or form. In Austin, maybe 8%. In Chile it’s .01%. I believe that all cultures start out with the same 10% who can start businesses, but some cultures push people who may not have started businesses to do it, while others push people who would have otherwise started a business to shy away. The most important thing entrepreneurs, government and academics can do is to try to free the people who would start a business, but don’t because of cultural pressures.

I’ve seen it first hand in Madison. When I was 19 and just starting with ExchangeHut, there were not many young entrepreneurs. I only knew 4-5 students and recent grads who were starting businesses. After JellyFish sold to Microsoft, Networked Insights started to have some success and young entrepreneurs like those in the Burrill Business Plan Competition started to get press in national publications and have some success, other people started to see that they too could start a business. Capital Entrepreneurs has accelerated the process, along with all sorts of cool initiatives from the startup community like barcamp, forward tech festival, high tech happy hour and more. I think Madison went from a 1% to a 3% city in the last five years. We still have a long way to go, but by unlocking the pent up entrepreneurial talent, we’ve seen an explosion in entrepreneurship. Just wait until we see what Madison looks like at 5%!

In Chile, I’d estimate that we’re at .1%: for every 1000 people who are entrepreneurs at heart, only 1 starts a business. That’s 1/1000! In Silicon Valley, it’s probably 200/1000, Austin 80/1000 and so on.

Part of Start-Up Chile‘s mission is to introduce entrepreneurs from all over the world into Chile’s culture to try to break the cultural pressures that punish failure and stifle innovation. I believe that we should be focusing on the other 9.9% of Chileans who might start a business if they were not afraid of being punished for their failure. If we can double the amount of entrepreneurs who start businesses, it will be a huge win for Chile. I see similar parallels to Madison and the entrepreneurial community is starting to take shape. People just need the entrepreneurial push!

What do you think? Are entrepreneurs distributed equally across the world or are more entrepreneurs born in one country compared to another? What can you do to help free up the rest of the entrepreneurs who are scared to make the leap?

I get asked to connect people all the time. I also ask others to connect me to people every single day. Getting introductions is an incredibly powerful way to get to know people who can help you with your business or in your personal life. It’s also great to be able to give an introduction to two people who will mutually benefit from knowing each other. Email introductions are the most common intros these days, so it’s important to know how to both introduce two people and respond to introductions.

Introducing Two People

I like to keep it really simple. Here’s a mock introduction between my business partner Jesse Davis and our friend/Madison entrepreneur Steve Faulkner of Real Time Txts.

To: Jesse Davis, Steve Faulkner

From: Nathan Lustig

Subject: Introducing You

Jesse, meet Steve Faulkner. Steve is, among other entrepreneurial endeavors, the founder of Real Time Txts, a service that texts subscribers free drink offers at local bars in real time. He also wrote an awesome article about Madison entrepreneurship that was featured in Techcrunch.

Steve, meet Jesse Davis. Jesse is the cofounder of Entrustet, a website that allows you to decide if you’d like your digital assets transferred to heirs or deleted when you die. He is also active in the Madison startup scene and Capital Entrepreneurs and writes a great entrepreneurship blog. Jesse is interested in connecting with you to see if there is a potential partnership for Real Time Txts and Entrustet.

I wanted to connect you guys so you could figure out how to make it happen. I’ll let you take it from here.

Thanks,
Nathan

Key Points to Remember

Use the format above to introduce both people to each other

Include links to each person’s business, unless the person is well known

Include a sentence at the end to say why you’re connecting both people to each other

Include a sentence that tells the two people you’ve just introduced that it’s up to them to take it farther

Responding to an Introduction

It’s fairly straight forward. Click reply all and thank the introducer for making the intro. Introduce yourself to the other person and go from there. It’s important to include the introducer in the first reply so that they know that you’ve actually responded. If I’ve taken the time to introduce two people, I want to know that they’ve actually taken the next step to connect. After the first email, feel free to leave the introducer off further conversations. Here’s a sample reply:

To: Jesse Davis, Nathan Lustig

From: Steve Faulkner

Nathan, Thanks for intro.

Jesse, many people have told me that we should meet as well. As Nate said, I’m the founder of Real Time Txts, a service that sends people texts about free drinks at Madison area bars. Do you have some time this week to chat via phone or meet up for coffee so we can discuss a potential partnership?

Thanks,

Steve

I hope this helps! What do you think? Do you use this format or do you have a different format that works well for you?

On the flight back from Austin after SXSW last March, I was taking with Jesse about how much fun it would be to have something like it in Madison. We thought it would be cool to try to set something up for the summer. When I got back, I pitched the idea to my friend Matt Younkle, who really liked the idea. In May, over some beers, we decided to try to make a go of it. As the summer rolled along, Matt, Bryan Chan and I continued to plan Madison’s tech conference.

The Forward Technology Conference took place at the Memorial Union on the UW campus on Friday and was a huge success. Over 120 Madison entrepreneurs, techies, investors and other tech savvy Madisonians attended the inaugural FTC2010 to hear from some of the most interesting people in the Madison technology scene.

FTC2010 was only a small part of the 10 day long Forward Technology Festival, which was sort of a “taste of Madison” but for all of the tech and entrepreneur focused groups in town. The Forward Technology Festival was the brainchild of Preston Austin, who had the foresight to try to bring all of the different tech groups in town together in a week long celebration. FTF2010 included High Tech Happy Hour, Capital Entrepreneurs, Sector67, BarCamp and other tech focused events.

FTC Highlights

The Forward Technology Conference kicked off with a panel called Entrepreneur 101, which featured four successful Madison entrepreneurs: Greg Tracy (Sharendipity), Dan Voell (GoBuzz), Chad Sorenson (Flamedisk) and Roy Elkins (Broadjam) and was moderated by Bryan Chan (Supranet). The panelists talked about their successes and lessons they’ve learned over their careers in the startup game. All of the entrepreneurs talked about staying focused as one of they keys to their success.

Next up was All About LLCs featuring attorney Joseph Boucher of Neider and Boucher and Kevin Kelbel an accountant from Smith & Gesteland LLP moderated by Matt Younkle (Y-Innovation). Boucher and Kelbel talked about the different types of business entities and shared stories about why different companies should choose LLCs, S or C corps.

After a quick lunch break, we did an hour of breakout sessions with topics proposed from the attendees. We ended up with a wide range of topics and settled on four. First was how to run an intern program led by Jesse Davis of Entrustet. The second group was about what a shared hackerspace in Madison should look like, led by Chris Meyer of Sector67. Another session was about biomimicry, with the last session focusing on the future of the web and HTML5 (hosted by Momenta’s Dan Gordon).

The final panel of the day was all about design, branding and identity. It featured John Besmer (Planet Propaganda), Wesley Grubbs (Pitch Interactive), Andy Wallman (Knupp & Watson & Wallman), Gage Mitchell (Gage Mitchell Design) and was moderated by Dan Merfeld, (TheoryThree Interactive). This was one of the more fun panels of the day and featured spirited discussion on the pros and cons of large and small design shops. The panelists stressed that brands need consistent messaging across all platforms or their marketing won’t work. My favorite quote of the day came from Besmer “If you’re thinking about your marketing when its time to do marketing, its way too late.”

We rolled on into my favorite part of the day: Pitch Your Biz. 5 startups had 5 minutes each to present their ideas to the crowd and then the crowd had 5 minutes to provide feedback, ideas and ways to improve the business. Biz Pitchers included Heidi Allstop (Student Spill), Derek Swoboda (Golf Links Cafe), Joseph Beck (Loacsys), Justin Beck (PerBlue) and Mudit Tyagi (Open ADC).

I love this format because it keeps the participants and the audience on their toes. The audience can’t fall asleep, since the pitches come fast and furious and there’s a new one every five minutes. All of the startups did a great job, as did the audience. My personal favorites were Student Spill, which I think has the potential to be a game changer by bringing support groups online, but with a tweak and PerBlue. Justin Beck from PerBlue is always an entertaining speaker because he is right to the point, provides compelling stats and doesn’t mince words. All five startups did a great job and Laurie Benson (Innacom) was a phenomenal MC.

Fred Foster of Electronic Theater Controls was the keynote speaker and told the story of how he founded ETC while he was still in school at UW. He told war story after war story about his battles growing the company into what it is today: $200m in revenue and 700+ employees. Foster had the audience laughing every few minutes and I could have listened to him tell stories for as long as he wanted to talk. I thought it was awesome that when he started the company, he wanted to sell theater controls to The Met and 20 years later, he actually did it. Talk about perseverance!

After the keynote, we put on a reception above the union terrace, right on the lake. The weather was perfect and I enjoyed talking with all of the attendees and learning about their current projects.

I really enjoyed FTC2010 and am hoping to make it an annual event. I know that with a full year to prepare, we can do an even better job and get more people in town to attend. Madison is turning into a startup hub in the Midwest. TechCrunch noticed. Forbes noticed and the local media is starting to take note. The Forward Tech Conference is another step in the right direction and one that I hope continues to put Madison on the map!

Did you attend FTC2010? What was your favorite part of the festival? Do you have any suggestions or feedback?

UPDATE: Shortly after I wrote this post, I got a follow up email from a member of Sen. Feingold’s staff with the correct email response. The next day, I got a phone call from a different member of the staff apologizing and asking if they could do anything else to help me and yesterday, I received an snail mail copy of the email response with Sen. Feingold’s signature. This morning, I got an update from one of his staffers about new changes to the Banking Bill that seem to help change the original problems. While it did take a negative blog post to get the correct response, I am impressed that Feingold’s staff has been this diligent about my blog post. I changed the title to add “(might not)” because I don’t think it’s fair that when people Google “vote Russ Feingold” my post comes up 5th.

–

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the new banking bill would screw up angel investing in the US. The bill plans to raise accredited investor levels by over 2x and institutes new regulation on angel investment. It treats angels like hedge funds, which is wrong. In the comments, someone asked how we could fight the bill. I answered that I didn’t really know, but would email both of my Senators, Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl.

I sent them both a shortened version of my blog post with a little background about me through their official Washington senate emails. I have yet to hear back from Senator Kohl, which is what I expected. Aside from making sure that the Milwaukee Bucks stay in Milwaukee and donating $25m to get his name on the Kohl Center, Kohl really hasn’t done anything for as long as I can remember.

I figured that I would get a response from Senator Feingold, since generally more involved and he’s up for re-election in November and some are predicting it will be a close race. He (or more likely someone from his staff) emailed me back today, 3 full weeks later, which isn’t too bad. I assume he gets hundreds, if not thousands of emails every day.

So here’s why I won’t vote for Feingold in November. I wrote to him about the angel investment changes in the tax bill, but here’s what I got back (emphasis added):

Dear Mr. Lustig,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your support for having private student loans be regulated by a consumer financial protection agency. I appreciate hearing from you, and strongly agree with you. In fact, I am a cosponsor of an amendment to the financial regulatory bill which would extend consumer financial protection agency regulations to student loans.

Access to high quality public education should be available to all children, and access to higher education should be based on a student’s desire to gain knowledge and skills, not financial resources. As I travel throughout Wisconsin, I hear from many individuals who cannot attend college or other post secondary training programs without financial aid. I also hear from students who are extremely concerned about their growing debt as they try to finance their education. I support efforts to make education beyond high school available and affordable to qualified individuals who wish to pursue it.

Thank you again for contacting me. For more information about my work on behalf of Wisconsin, you can subscribe to my monthly e-newsletter by visiting http://feingold.senate.gov/newsletter.cfm. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Feingold (or his staff) couldn’t be bothered to actually respond to my email. I took the time to write him an email, the least he could do is make sure he wrote me back about the issue I wrote about! I understand it is most likely a mistake, but it’s a mistake that shouldn’t happen. It shows that he (or his staff) don’t really care about the people who write him emails. I know I’m not the only person who’s had a similar experience, as I’ve talked to two other people who have written to Feingold and never gotten any response. To be honest, I’d have rather not gotten any response than the one above.

The 2010 Burrill business plan competition was held yesterday at UW. One year ago today, Jesse and I won the students choice award for Entrustet. Writing the plan, talking to the judges and presenting at the competition helped us launch the company. Almost one exactly year later, we had our launch party in Madison and we’ve been featured on Mashable, The Financial Times and tons of other media. It’s amazing what a year of hard work on a cool idea can bring!

I went to the 2010 public exhibition yesterday to check out the new companies and invite participants to join Capital Entrepreneurs. It’s safe to say that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well on campus. There were some really cool ideas this year, with the top prizes going to im-Bed Biosciences ($10k), Sector 67 ($7k), ProPov ($4k) and MycoLogyx LLC ($1k) with Student Spill taking home $1k and free office space in the Metro Innovation Center. Buffalo Shoals took home the Green Credit worth $1k.

I took some pictures of some of the cool new businesses I checked out. I only had my iPhone camera, so the picture quality does not match the business quality. Sorry for that.

SPILL is “an anonymous network of students who have formed a venting outlet for college problems that everyone seems to go through, but few people want to LISTEN to. We’re an email based support system FOR and OF college students …just to provide a place to spill your guts or console others who need to vent.”

Allstop started Spill as a student organization and has successfully helped students all over campus. She has the potential to expand to other campuses across the country and won $1k plus free office space for a year. Heidi is also a CE member!

This team has a really cool product. Many bikers use helmet mounted mirrors to see what’s behind them. The team created a prototype that updates this system for the 21st century. They have a camera that goes on the back of the helmet which transmits to a front mounted LCD screen. They are in the early stages, but have a cool prototype. Their goal is to embed the camera and the wiring into the helmet so that it will not hurt you if you crash. Bikers love to spend money on the latest gadget, so if done right, I could see it catching on and becoming profitable.

ProPOV – Jon Mumm

Jon has a really interesting backstory. Originally from Milwaukee, he got really good at the first person shooter Counter Strike. He was so good that he was able to turn pro and earns money playing the game on the pro circuit. I know many of you are thinking, “what? turning pro to play video games?” but there is actually a well developed professional video game circuit in the USA and an incredibly popular one in Asia.

Jon always had people asking his for tips on how to get better at the game, so he started a website called JuanSource to help teach counter strike players the tips they would need to get really good at the game. He saved video of him playing the game and commented over the action, helping people get better. Naturally, he charged money for the commentary and started to have a profitable online business.

His new software the he developed, ProPOV, takes in game commentary to the next level, allowing gamers to comment live over the game. ProPOV has a nice niche that could be very profitable as it gets rolled out.

Summary

Overall, I was impressed by the quality of this year’s ideas. You can watch all of the presentations in full on the Burrill website. I’ve been involved in the competition as a participant or viewer since 2006, and it seems like the ideas keep getting better each year. 30% of this years entries had at least one female on the team, which I believe is a big improvement over past years. What was even more impressive is that most of the women who entered the competition were doing so outside of fashion, which is a great improvement. Imagine how many more cool companies there would be if women started startups at the same rate that men do?

A few different people have asked me “what sorts of things should be taught in a college level beginning entrepreneurship class?” I always had a few answers, but never came up with a comprehensive syllabus. After speaking in a class earlier this week at the UW Business School, I decided to write up a basic syllabus for a 16 week college course that I’d call Entrepreneur 101: A Practical Guide to Starting A Business and added it as a page to my site. I would love to teach a class like this on the college level for interested entrepreneurs.

Introduction to the Course

Too many classes focus on theory and large, overarching issues instead of practical things that you will need to know to start a business. Hopefully this class will prepare you to actually start your business by giving you the tools to do all of the nitty gritty work that is necessary to get started. At the end of the semester, students will compete in a business plan competition in front of a panel of judges.

Week 1 – Introduction to Entrepreneurship

Class: There are many types of entrepreneurship, not just high tech. It’s easier than you think and college is the best time to start. How to Live Before You Die.

Required reading: How to Start a Startup, What Startups are Really Like, The 3 Advantages of a Startup, Entrepreneurs Come in All Shapes and Sizes

Week 2 – Idea Generation and Business Plans

So help me out: What am I missing? Would you take a class like this? Do you think universities would be willing to offer a class like this?

From time to time, Thomas Friedman writes something that has the power to change lives. So far, Friedman’s The World Is Flat has had the greatest impact on me, as it inspired my business partner, Jesse Davis, to start work on our startup, Entruset. The ideas in his book are still reverberating through our company today, as we got our first mention in the press in today’s Washington Post and continue to work to solve the problem he identified in the book. You can read the entire story over on our company blog in a post called How Thomas Friedman and The World Is Flat Helped Spawn Entrustet.

I think his latest piece titled More (Steve) Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs has the potential to impact the lives of even more people. Friedman says:

The most striking feature of Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency was the amazing, young, Internet-enabled, grass-roots movement he mobilized to get elected. The most striking feature of Obama’s presidency a year later is how thoroughly that movement has disappeared.

I remember getting inundated by posts from my friends on Facebook in the weeks leading up to the election urging me to support Obama, attend rallies or make sure to go out and vote. The movement continued for the next few weeks, but has completely lost steam. Even the most ardent Obama supporters among my friends aren’t engaged via social media anymore. This in itself is pretty amazing, but not Friedman’s main point. He wants President Obama to re-engage America’s youth and doesn’t believe that going after Wall Street or other negative methods will work. He continues:

Obama should launch his own moon shot. What the country needs most now is not more government stimulus, but more stimulation. We need to get millions of American kids, not just the geniuses, excited about innovation and entrepreneurship again. We need to make 2010 what Obama should have made 2009: the year of innovation, the year of making our pie bigger, the year of “Start-Up America.”

Obama should make the centerpiece of his presidency mobilizing a million new start-up companies that won’t just give us temporary highway jobs, but lasting good jobs that keep America on the cutting edge. The best way to counter the Tea Party movement, which is all about stopping things, is with an Innovation Movement, which is all about starting things. Without inventing more new products and services that make people more productive, healthier or entertained — that we can sell around the world — we’ll never be able to afford the health care our people need, let alone pay off our debts.

I am 100% behind this idea. It makes perfect sense and would appeal to both sides of the aisle at at time when partisanship is at a seemingly all time high because of the fight over health care. It would harken back to the Obama that many young people voted for, rather than the less than inspirational version of the President who we have gotten to know since his election.

I believe that entrepreneurship is our best hope for saving the US from its mammoth debt obligations. We need to find ways to “grow the pie” rather than trying to raise taxes on a stagnant (or shrinking) pie. I believe that all kinds of entrepreneurship are going to be necessary to solve our problems. We are going to need traditional entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, but we will also need social entrepreneurs like Muhammad Yunus and the social entrepreneurs featured in Business Week.

I think that if President Obama were to make entrepreneurship a central portion of his presidency, he will find a huge groundswell of willing entrepreneurs who will be willing to help. Friedman mentions National Lab Day and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship as examples of organization that are helping young people get interested in innovation. Both programs would not be able to survive without older, successful mentors. I think that entrepreneurs are willing to help out as mentors and young people are waiting to be entrepreneurs, but some are just waiting to be pushed. Inc. Magazine contributor and author of Upstarts!, Donna Fenn says:

Over 75% of the entrepreneurs I interviewed for my book, Upstarts! said that they were very or highly likely to start another company; most had already founded two or more.” She continues, “70% said their companies had a social mission. But make no mistake: they’re laser-focused on the bottom line as well and they understand why growing a profitable, sustainable company that creates jobs is a social good in and of itself. It’s pretty clear to me: this is a generation worth investing in.

Fenn‘s point is important because many startups are not only creating jobs and coming up with new solutions to problems, but they are also trying to make the world a better place. If we can get more people to think with this mindset, the US and the world will be a better place. So President Obama, please follow Friedman’s advice. This is a no lose issue for you and the country. You should be able to get support from both sides of the aisle. You should be able to reconnect with an electorate that wants to support you, but has not because you have abandoned what got you into office. Go back to the politics of hope, propose real solutions that everyone can get behind and see what happens. I bet it will change lives.

Note: This post is the third in a new series called “Entrepreneur Profiles.” These posts focus on an interesting entrepreneur who I’ve gotten to know and hopefully provide a window into their business that you might not otherwise find in a newspaper or magazine.

Justin Beck is the co-founder and CEO of PerBlue, a software startup in Madison. PerBlue’s flagship product, Parallel Kingdom, is the first location based game built for the iPhone and Android and has over 80,000 players worldwide. Founded in January 2008 while he was still in school, Beck and his team have worked to create a successful game and an interesting business model. Beck graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.

Nathan Lustig: Hi Justin, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Can you give me a brief overview of your company?

Justin Beck: Sure. PerBlue was created when we started developing our flagship game, Parallel Kingdom, in January 2008. The first version was released in October 2008 and we’ve been steadily gaining players and improving the game ever since. The game is on its 3rd major version and we currently have over 80,000 players.

We have 7 more or less full-time people working for us and are growing nicely. We have also developed several other applications for the iPhone and Android platforms but our most successful app remains Parallel Kingdom. As we’ve grown we have found our business to be building great multiplayer games for mobile platforms.

NL: What kind of background did you have to be able to start a mobile gaming company?

JB: I have been programming since I was 12 years old and love to do it. I graduated from UW-Madison with a Computer Engineering and Computer Science Degree and I interned as a software engineer at Google and as a program manager at Microsoft on their ASP.NET team.

NL: Many founders of startups have some sort of an “ah-ha moment” when they first got the idea for their company. Did you have one and what was it?

JB: I’m thinking that could be true for us.

I was working on a different startup with some friends from Google. We were going to build a community bar and real-time chat for webpages as a script mashup, which was going great. But when Andrew Hanson (my partner) and I were doing homework one night, we starting thinking about the next game we should make. I was like, we should build something mobile, something people actually would play, simple, and we should throw GPS into it somehow to make it interesting.

From that conversation, we started with Parallel Kingdom. It was about a month later when I realized the mobile space was really growing and I should invest myself into build a company around that space. This was before the iPhone Appstore even existed. I would say that was my “ah-ha” moment. I just knew it. It wasn’t a tough choice.

NL: What is the biggest reason you founded your startup?

JB: I love adventure. I saw building a company as the next challenge in my life. Two of my life goals were to work at Google and Microsoft. I had been there and gotten offers from them, but this opportunity came up and the timing couldn’t get much better. Many people assume lots of things about people who run their own business, many of these are explicitly not true with me.

I actually really like working for someone else and trying to make them as successful as possible. I also really have no interest in the money. I took a 2 year pay cut to do PerBlue. So for me, it’s the adventure and challenge.

NL: What is the biggest unexpected challenge you had to overcome?

JB: I would say my biggest unexpected challenge was how hard it is to be a really good manager of a creative team. I am still working on it, but doing it well is very hard.

NL: What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting a startup?

JB:

1. Play to win, commit yourself to playing the game and be willing to be very flexible in how you navigate the pathway. Watch and model people who have built successful companies and learn from them. (Watching failure doesn’t teach you how to succeed)

2. Have a specific goal: we are going to do “this.” Drive yourself and your team to this goal.

3. Have a schedule, (roadmap) that is a reasonable plan of getting to that goal.

4. Commitment and talent are the 2 most important traits of your teammates.

5. Stay focused. You can only build one business at a time. Choose your business and stick to it till its done.

6. It’s a marathon not a sprint, pace yourself emotionally, mentally, physically

NL: What are three websites you check everyday?

JB: Not many. Pandora, Facebook, Google Analytics, PKStats, Bug Tracking is my honest list. But websites I check weekly bi-weekly when I am thinking about strategy or competitive research.

http://techcrunch.com
http://news.ycombinator.com/

I have my executives I try to watch. Marc Pincus (Zynga), Eric Schmidt (Google), Jason Fried (37signals)

I like watching talks, Google Tech Talks are amazing.

NL: Do you have any funny stories or amusing anecdotes about starting or running the company? Do people ask you “when are you going to get a real job?”

JB: There are lots of funny stories. One of the easiest ones to explain is DB Death Day and yes it is a PerBlue holiday. We had some problems with the database and issued a statement that: “There was a massive forest fire in PK, resulting in every tree in the western hemisphere being burnt to the ground.” Along with the loss of every GeoBuzz post. It was a sad day, but somewhat comical looking back.

I have actually never heard that statement about getting a real job. Most people are very encouraging. Most people don’t understand what it takes to build a business. So that makes their empathy hard. I think the most negative person towards PerBlue was my recruiter at Microsoft when I turned down their offer and counter offer, but that was her job.

NL: What/who has been the biggest help to you and your company?

JB: My mentors have been amazing. During PerBlue’s life I have now had about 7 mentors, as the life stage of the company changes the mentors I use and depend on also changes. But I can’t imagine doing this without mentors. My partner Andrew has also been an amazing asset, starting a company with a partner is an extremely wise idea. Team is what makes the company, without the PerBlue team, we would have never gotten off the launch pad.

NL: What is the most fun part of running your company? The least?

JB: I would say the most enjoyable parts of running PerBlue, are working with the team, building and solving big problems, having things work, and seeing players love the game and play it so much and actually see our business become successful. I personally get a lot of gratification when I see my co-workers growing and become excellent at what they do. I think the least enjoyable part of my job are the days when it seems like everything “breaks” or when things just don’t go like you need them to.

NL: Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, you had some great advice. Good luck in the future.

I know it’s a little late for a year end review, but I thought I finally have time to finish this post. I wanted to take a look at some of my favorite things from 2009 and take a look ahead to some interesting thing for 2010.

2009 was a fun year. I graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin, made great progress on Entrustet, made some good friends and traveled to Europe with one of my best friends to visit another. I was in another great friend’s wedding, got my consulting company off the ground, saw some amazing sporting events and got more involved in Madison. I even stuck with my blog.

I’m looking forward to going to South Africa for the World Cup this summer, attending South By Southwest and continuing to work on Entrustet. I think 2010 will be another fun and interesting year for me. I hope your 2010 is too!

Predictions for 2010s

I know it’s just about impossible to look forward a few months, much less a year or even a decade, but here’s some guesses as to where we are headed.

2010

Gold will continue its rise in response to more US government debt creation

Developing countries continue to grow more quickly than developed countries.

Unemployment will become the biggest political problem next year, but entrepreneurs will be somewhat sheltered

Longer Term

The Reserve Status of US dollar will be called into question. Look for China and the rest of the world to continue to diversify away from US government debt. I don’t know when this will happen, but I can’t see any other solution to the US’s massive debt and unfunded liabilities.

At some point, bubbles in China, US debt and others may pop. This could lead to lower stock values and a resumption of the bear market.

China will move from manufacturer to the world toward one of the leading innovators. China will continue to assert itself on the political and economic stages. Look for their dominance in rare earth metals.

Entrepreneurs around the world will be successful, as large companies do not want to invest in new technologies and talent is cheap.
