You may have noticed that I haven’t had many new posts lately. I’m in Austin, TX at South By Southwest, where we launched Entrustet Beta two days ago. After about 18 months of work, we are incredibly proud of the site.

With Account Guardian, we’ve created a free way for you to create a secure list of all of your digital assets (any online account or file on your computer) and decide what you’d like done with each asset when you pass away. You can either decide to delete individual digital assets or decide to pass specific assets to heirs of your choosing.

Jesse gave his presentation People Die, Profiles Don’t at South By Southwest yesterday and we got a great reaction. The most tweeted about portion was our stat that over 285,000 American Facebook users will pass away this year. We calculated this number using Facebook’s own stats and US Government data provided by the US Census and the Centers for Disease Control.

We believe that this number shows that companies already face a large problem about what to do with digital assets when their users die. I’ll have a longer post about where I think the industry is going once I get back to Madison on Wednesday, so stayed tuned!

I think one of the most interesting stories of the 2010s will be whether my generation puts an end to “gotcha journalism” or makes the problem even worse than it is today.

The classic definition of gotcha journalism usually refers to an interview style where the interviewer tries to trap the interviewee into saying something that would be damaging to themselves or their cause. It has been around since the early 80s and became firmly rooted into our political and popular culture since then.

With the rise of the Internet, journalists, bloggers and citizens have taken gotcha journalism to new levels. The barrier to entry is much lower: instead of having to secure an interview with someone in order to trap the interviewee, the new breed of gotcha journalism uses the Internet to sift through all of the statements that a person has made in their entire life to try to paint them in a bad light.

Now, bloggers go through politicians’ every public statement for any misspeak or inaccuracy and then try to crucify them. It started with John Kerry being labeled a “flip-flopper,” moved to George Bush‘s butchering of the English language and more recently, led President Obama’s Green Energy Czar to quit because of statements he made almost ten years ago. When President Obama misspoke on the campaign trail, saying that he had visited all 57 states, right wing bloggers tried to make it seem like Obama was stupid. When Sarah Palin burst onto the national scene, left wing bloggers and some in the media sifted through her previous public statements to search for any inaccuracy.

It seems like 75% of the news stories I read about each day have to do with some politician getting raked over the coals for some statement he just made that is different from a statement he made a long time ago. Many times, the person leveling the charge is a fellow politician, along with the media and the blogosphere.

My generation is the first generation to be online from an early age. We first interacted with email, then instant messaging, then social networks and now blogs. We created (and are still creating) vast amounts of data about ourselves, much of which is stored online. We have archived AIM conversations from when we were in 6th grade, digital pictures from high school and college that are online and we all have our dumb Facebook wall posts that we made throughout our college years.

Many of us have blogs on wordpress or blogger and many more have microblogging accounts on services like Twitter where we make observations and pithy comments about our daily lives. I know I’ve changed alot since I was in 6th grade and I assume I will change almost as much between now and the end of the 2010s. During the next decade, as people in my generation get older and become leaders in business, politics and culture, will we still be subjected to gotcha journalism like our public figures are today?

One argument is that since everyone has all of this content online, we will become desensitized to people’s dumb or incorrect statements from when they were young. Everyone has pictures of themselves on Facebook that they wished never made it online. Everyone is going to have a poorly thought out wall post that could be taken out of context, or a pithy remark on Twitter that does not stand the test of time. Anyone who blogs about anything interesting will be majorly wrong about something. Will millennials become bored by the new gotcha journalism because everyone has something online that could make them look bad?

On the other hand, millennials may just make gotcha journalism even worse than it is today. Since everyone has created gigabytes of online content, bloggers and the media will have an easier time digging up dirt on anyone who enters the public eye. Imagine being able to see the new candidate for Governor at a boozy college party or getting a transcript of his AIM conversations with his best friend or girlfriend from high school. The media, bloggers and most of all, the citizens will eat this stuff up. Ratings will go up and everyone will be happy, execpt for the public feature.

I hope that my generation helps start the shift away from gotcha journalism. I can’t imagine being shocked by the vast majority of the dirt that someone would dig up about a public figure online. I hope that millennials are willing to allow people to change their opinion and not be called a flip-flopper. I hope we will cut public figures some slack when their college photos get published to the major blogs and their old blog posts come back to haunt them. I’m not optimistic, but I am hopeful. If not, we will have some really boring politicians, business leaders and public figures!

Do you think millenials will help stop gotcha journalism or do you think the problem will get worse?

I was looking at an event one of my friends created for his birthday when one of the Facebook ads on the upper right caught my eye. Normally, I don’t pay any attention to Facebook ads because they are usually for stupid things like dating sites, Facebook games and all sorts of services that I would never use, but this one was different. I was pretty shocked by what I saw.

Most ads for arcade shooters have cartoony characters in them, but this was different. The soldiers clearly look like US soldiers in desert camouflage, being viewed through a sniper scope. They could be soldiers who were deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. A quick Google search for American soldiers reveals plenty of photos that look very much like the one used in this advertisement. Even if they are not American soldiers, I still think it is wrong.

The text in the ad really puts it over the top:

RAW Shooter. No story, no tactics, no costs. Just aim and shoot. Addicting. Click here to PLAY!

I have no problem with shoot ‘em up games, but to use real soldiers being targeted via sniper rifle in an ad is in poor taste and offensive. Many soldiers have died as a result of sniper attack in Iraq and Afghanistan and to make it into a game is really crossing the line. Whether you agree with the war or not, these soldiers serve our country. They do not deserve to be targeted in a Facebook ad to promote some dumb game. This ad is disgusting.

I clicked on the ad and was taken to Gamevance.com, a site that allows you to play a whole bunch of arcade style games. At first I thought that the ad was created by a freelance search marketing company that gets paid for driving traffic to the company, but could not find an affiliate program. The site may use another type of affiliate marketing, but I could not find it easily. There are three possible conclusions. First, gamevance.com created this ad promote their shoot ‘em up game. Second, a freelance marketer without a connection to gamevance.com created the ad. Third, there is a chance the soldiers approved their images in this ad, but I highly doubt it. Gamevance should make sure that this ad is not shown again.

Which brings me to my next question: how did this ad get approved by Facebook? They usually take at least a day to approve ads when I have used them for different businesses and have some pretty stringent rules for companies to follow before ads are approved. How did the Facebook Ad approval process allow an ad like this to get through? Someone at Facebook has some explaining to do.

I also wonder how other Facebook advertisers feel about this ad. When I saw the RAW Shooter ad, there was a large banner for Freshetta pizza below it. I wonder how they like being featured on the same page as an ad targeting US military personnel through a sniper scope. Facebook has advertisers like Freshetta, AT&T and many others.

What do you think? Is this advertisement offensive? How do you think it got past Facebook’s approval process? Do you think other advertisers will be annoyed by this?

I just got back from a trip to New York. While I was there, I met with a promising entrepreneur who has a great startup that has been pretty successful so far. He is in the middle of expanding his business nationwide. We came upon the topic of competition and how to deal with it. I realized that many people have some misconceptions about competition.

My advice was “don’t be afraid of competiton.” I learned this lesson when I was running ExchangeHut and talked about it at last year’s Entrepreneurial Deli event in Madison. While we were running ExchangeHut’s trading platform for college students, our biggest fear was that Facebook would launch a marketplace that would crush our competitive advantage. When we heard that Facebook was launching its marketplace, we changed big parts of our strategy to react to the new competition that had yet to launch.

Big mistake. When marketplace first launched, it was fairly useless and was not a competitor to our business. We had changed some of our bigger plans because we were afraid of competition and did not expand as quickly as we had planned because of it. Our competition did not hurt us. My point is that you never know if your competition will actually be successful. If you have a great idea, don’t immediately change your plans if you hear about competition. Execute on your ideas and let the chips fall where they may. If your idea is good and you execute well, you will be successful.

Another point on competition: Don’t be afraid to get in contact with your competition. This isn’t t say that you should tell your competitors (or the world) every last detail of your plans to conquer the world, but you should be on good terms with the other people and companies in your space. We found that it paid off to get to know the other startups that were in our market. We talked to just about everyone in our market.

We even ended up being able to work out some great deals with competition because we were on good terms with them and they knew we existed. There really is no downside to being on good terms with the others in your market. You never know when a great opportunity will present itself to you or one of your competitors that will be beneficial to both of you. Plus, if you plan to start another company, these contacts will be valuable later. If we had been afraid of competition and not talked to them, we would have missed out. Moral of the story: don’t be afraid of competition, get to know them, but don’t tell them everything!

Marcus Fitzgerald, the younger brother of NFL star WR Larry Fitzgerald apologized for writing disparaging remarks about QB Kurt Warner on his Twitter account. LB Nick Barnett, LB Robert Henson and C Kevin Love have their own Twitter snafus. Two Wisconsin Deputy Sheriffs burn a dummy wearing a co-worker’s uniform and post the video on Facebook, leading to their dismissal. Employees at the National Science Foundation were fired for looking at porn at work for 331 days. What do these incidents have in common? They are all examples from the last week of people doing something stupid on the Internet and being SHOCKED when they are caught.

It seems like I hear about another story like this every day and I can’t seem to figure out why. When the Internet first starting becoming popular in the late 90s, it was not uncommon to hear about people being fired for looking at porn at the office, buying illegal items over the Internet or trying to meet up with underage children. I chalked that up to stupid people bringing their shady offline behavior to the Internet and not understanding that the Internet is basically public. I figured that people did not realize that pretty much anyone could find out about what they were doing since the Internet was new.

Fast forward to 2009. It’s been a decade since people started to become familiar with the Internet. Everyone in the United States should have heard hundreds of these stories in the last ten years. It wouldn’t surprise me if most Americans know at least one person personally who has done something stupid online that has led to adverse consequences. Why does it continue to happen and why are people who slap videos up on YouTube shocked when they are discovered? Why do people have a sense of anonymity and privacy with the Internet, when in reality, the Internet is probably the least private place in the world?

Why do underage drinkers post pictures of themselves on Facebook for the police or school officials to find when they would not post those pictures on their lockers? Why do teens send nude pictures of themselves to their classmates over their cellphones or on Facebook when they would never give pass around a hard copy? Why do grown men go to chat rooms and try to proposition children and go to meet them, even after the popularity of Chris Hansen’s To Catch A Predator, when they would never approach a child on the street (or even on the phone) with the same advances? Why do people post rants on their Facebook or Twitter pages when they would never put the same information into a newspaper or say it to the person’s face? Why do people do illegal things and post them on Youtube or Facebook video when they would never send them to their local news station? Why do people post all sorts of things online that they would be mortified to do in real life? Why are they shocked when they are caught?

I truly don’t understand it. They have to know better. They have to have seen examples of people getting into trouble for posting things online. I cannot figure out why people have a sense of anonymity online when in reality it is the exact opposite.

I think about 20% of the people who do these types of things are just stupid. They are equivalent to the guy who walks into the grocery store and waits for an employee to walk by, then shoves a frozen turkey under his coat. They just don’t get it. There is another 5-10% of people who just want to be “YouTube famous” and will post just about anything to be popular. There is no helping these people.

My hypothesis for the rest of the population is that people who are posting these types of things online are generally alone, in their office or their home, and are lulled into a false sense of security. They think that they are alone at home, so how can anyone else see what they are doing? I don’t think that they are crying out for help or trying to get caught. I think there is something about the isolation that is caused by computers and the internet that gives people the idea that they being private and careful, when in fact, it is the exact opposite. They view the Internet as their own personal world, without regard to the rest of the people who happen to inhabit their virtual world as well.

I wonder if this is the height of the problem and history will look back at 2003-2009 as the crazy years when people were naive about the Internet, posting whatever they wanted and doing whatever they wanted, without regard to the consequences. It could also go the other way, where everyone becomes desensitized to the stupid things people do online, but I do not think so.

Help me understand. What’s your hypothesis as to why people slap pictures on Facebook and videos on YouTube that can get them in trouble? Why do so many people have a sense of anonymity online? Will it continue?

A British woman from Liverpool recently found her now adult son on Facebook after being unable to find him since he was abducted by his father. The woman was married to a Hungarian man, but they got divorced. The ex-husband had visitation rights and took the boy to the zoo, but never came back. The ex-husband took the then 3 year old boy back to communist Hungary and was not heard from for 27 years.

The boy’s aunt and mother appealed to parliement and the Prime Minister, but they were unable to help get the boy back. Fast forward to 2009. The boy’s aunt googled his name and the first hit was his Facebook page. They sent him a message and a phone number and waited. After two weeks, he messaged back and he was able to be reunited with his mother.

This story shows the incredible power of the Internet and social networks in general. Its not to see a story in the media about some of the benefits of social networks, rather than stories about the dangers. I wonder how many other missing children are on Facebook without their parents’ knowledge?

I recently blogged about the Facebook ads called “Get Your Obama Check.” Those appear to be gone already, but they have been replaced by new ones with a similar message. These ads are called “Ball out of control at 23″ ”I make more than my dad” “Make $169 between classes” and a bunch of others. They all feature really nice cars or just wads of cash. Here are a few of the captions from the ads:

Make insane amounts of cash during class. Stop being broke.

I know its not fair. Hes been working his whole life. Its easy.

You can afford this car. Its easy.

Stop being lazy. Google makes you $5000 per month.

Again, they all link to the same “blog” complete with fake replies. They all claim they only want $1 for delivery of their “info packet.”

Facebook must be really, really, really desperate for revenue if they are accepting this type of ad. Facebook must not be able to get any reputable company to pay for CPM ads because, by now, everyone knows about their abysmal click through rates and the CPCs are pretty high for most college campuses. That’s another tipoff that these sites must be scams or promise more than they deliver. If they can afford to the CPC necessary to get play on the University of Wisconsin network, they must be paying at a bare minimum $.10 CPC. Most likely its higher, closer to $.50, as that’s what I have paid in the past.

I understand that revenue is revenue, no matter the source, but Facebook should not be known for sending its customers to shady, get rich quick schemes. Even if they are legal, I would not want to be known as a company to be dealing with these types of companies. I wouldn’t want to direct my customers to these sites.

It will be interesting to see if these ads will generate a backlash eventually. I’m thinking it will, as these types of ads bring Facebook into the MySpace realm, a move that Facebook has been trying to fight since its beginnings.

When I logged into Facebook today, one of the ads on the right hand side (the ones that don’t get blocked by adblock), grabbed my attention. Normally all of the ads are pictures of girls with the caption “Am I Your Wife” or “Meet Hot Girls” or MLM pyramid schemes.

This ad said “Get your Obama Check” with an obviously photoshopped picture of Obama holding a government check over the bottom half of his face. The caption said “The government is giving away billions of dollars to stimulate the economy. Find out how I got $12,000.”

I clicked on the link because I was curious to see if this was in any way, shape or form associated with Obama. I thought it wasn’t, but since the Obama campaign was the most tech savvy and used social networks the most in the history of politics, I thought there could be a possibility it was a new Obama program to reach Facebook users.

The first link led me to a “blog” by a guy who claimed to be from Chicago, named Tom. It is one of the fakest looking blogs of all time. He claims that he got 12k from the government, allowing him to pay off his 10k credit card debt, take a 1k vacation and save 1k. All this occurred within 30 days of him asking to government for money. He says:

My name is Tom and I am from Chicago, IL. After hearing all the news on the Government Bailout of the banks and the possibility of an Auto industry bailout, I decided there had to be a way for me to get some money like that from the government. Because if anyone needs a bailout, it is hard working Americans like myself, who have a hard time keeping their head above water. After Doing some research I found that the US government has all kinds of free grants available to the public, for all sorts of reasons, that often go unclaimed. And these grants are not loans, they are checks you never have to pay back, funded by different government agencies. And if they don’t give what they were budgeted, they actually get less money the following year. So these government employee processors are just approving application after application, especially if no one is applying for these financial aid programs. So after researching on Yahoo Answers, I found a program that helps guide you through the process and I signed up for Goverment Funded Grants.

But most importantly I want to help other people get the money they are entitled to and not stand by while all these fat cats from large companies get rich off government bailouts. We all deserve to live debt free, so I am glad I signed up.

At the end of the “blog” you can click on a link that takes you to a page that prominently features Obama. It asks you to sign up to receive info on how to get your free cash.

Beyond the obvious idiocy of these claims, its amazing that the Obama administration allows these people to use his image so prominently. First it was drug dealers, now its people trying to capitalize on the recession and America’s laziness and desire for get rich quick solutions. It will be interesting to see if Facebook continues to run these ads or if anyone protests their inclusion of Obama’s face. You would think that at least one of President Obama’s zealous college student supporters would have reported this by now.

EDIT: Forrest commented below saying that the site uses IP locations to change where “Tom” is from based on where you are browsing from. Shady. I still see these ads on Facebook and the “get your obama check” websites are still up. Secret Service, what’s up?

While I probably haven’t eaten fast food in at least six months, Burger King is my favorite burger chain solely based on its innovative marketing.

They are at it again with their Facebook application Whopper Sacrifice. WhopperSacrifice.com says:

What would you do for a free WHOPPER? Now is the time to put your fair-weather web friendships to the test. Install WHOPPER Sacrifice on your Facebook profile and we will reward you with a free flame-broiled WHOPPER when you sacrifice 10 of your friends.

When a Facebook user defriends someone, Whopper Sacrifice notifies the defriended person with a notice that the person likes Whoppers more than them.

This is by far my favorite Facebook Application so far. It fulfils an actual need, food, and makes fun of all of the quasi-friends that everyone has on Facebook. It’s incredibly sticky and extremely viral: one user turns into at least 10 users very quickly.

As of today, over 30250 people have been defriended in favor of the Whopper and it is going up fast. I am surprised that Facebook has allowed this app to continue, as it eats away (pun intended) at its user base. Even if the Facebook team decides that this app violates the terms of service, it is a publicity coup for Burger King and a strategy that other web companies should emulate.

Shana Madoff, the niece of Bernie Madoff, the now infamous hedge fund fraudster, has deleted her Facebook profile to try to get out of the public eye. Will this be a trend that others continue when they run afoul of the law, or is this a special case?

Imagine the political fallout of the discovery of Obama or McCain photos of the caliber of the average college student. These pictures will be commonplace in the future for any person coming of age now.

It’s going to be interesting to see whether politicians and others of high status of the social networking generation are going to be punished for photos of them engaging in behavior that would be frowned upon by today’s politicians. Will people in their 20s now be more forgiving of drunken pictures or off color halloween costumes than would people in their 50s?

We will find out.
